Why Pilates Feels Easy… Until It Doesn’t

At first glance, Pilates doesn’t look that intense.

The movements are slow.
There’s no jumping around.
No heavy weights.

From the outside, it almost looks… easy.

Until you actually try it.

It doesn’t rely on speed

In most workouts, you can get away with momentum.

You move faster.
You push through reps.
You use a bit of swing to get it done.

Pilates takes that away.

Everything is controlled.
Every movement is intentional.

Which means you can’t rush through it.

And that’s where it starts to feel different.

Small movements, big effort

One of the biggest surprises for people is how challenging the “small” movements feel.

Holding a position.
Moving slowly through a range.
Staying controlled the entire time.

It doesn’t look like much.
But your muscles are working the whole time.

That’s why you start to feel the shake.

Not because you’re weak.
But because your body is actually being challenged in a new way.

It builds a different kind of strength

This isn’t just about lifting heavier or moving faster.

It’s about:

  • control
  • stability
  • awareness

The kind of strength that supports everything else you do.

When you build that foundation, your other workouts start to feel better too.

You move more efficiently.
You feel more balanced.
You have more control.

You can’t hide in Pilates

In faster workouts, it’s easier to compensate.

Your stronger muscles take over.
You get through the movement without really noticing what’s happening.

Pilates doesn’t let that happen.

It brings attention to:

  • where you’re tight
  • where you’re unstable
  • where you’re not fully in control

It exposes the small things that usually get overlooked.

And those small things matter.

Why it suddenly feels hard

There’s usually a moment in Pilates where it clicks.

When you stop just “doing the movement” and start actually feeling it.

That’s when it gets harder.

Because now:

  • you’re more aware
  • you’re more controlled
  • you’re not rushing

You’re doing it properly.

And that’s the whole point.

The GRITT approach to Pilates

At GRITT, Pilates isn’t about taking it easy.

It’s about learning how to move well.

We focus on:

  • controlled movement
  • proper alignment
  • building strength from the inside out

So when you go into kickboxing or strength training, your body is ready.

Stronger. More stable. More efficient.

The bottom line

Pilates doesn’t feel hard because it’s fast or intense.

It feels hard because it’s precise.

Because you’re not skipping steps.
You’re not relying on momentum.

You’re actually doing the work.

And that’s why it works.

Most people start working out because they want to lose weight. That’s usually the hook. But if you’ve ever stuck with training for more than a few weeks, you’ll notice something… the number on the scale stops being the most important thing. Not because it doesn’t matter at all, but because other things start to matter more. Things you didn’t even expect.

For a lot of people, training starts the same way. Push harder. Do more. Don’t stop. You ignore the tightness. You push through fatigue. You treat every session like it has to be your best. And for a while, that can work. Until it doesn’t. You feel run down. Progress slows. Small aches start to show up more often. And suddenly, you’re working just as hard… but getting less back. That’s usually the point where things need to change.

You’ve been showing up. You’ve been putting in the effort. You’re doing the workouts, sweating, trying to stay consistent… But somehow, it still feels like nothing’s really changing. And that’s the part that gets frustrating. Because it’s not like you’re not trying.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re putting in the effort but not really seeing the results you want… you’re not alone. A lot of people think the answer is doing more. More workouts. More intensity. More sweat. But most of the time, it’s not about doing more. It’s about having structure. Because without it, even the hardest work can feel like you’re just spinning your wheels.

Let’s be honest. Starting over is frustrating. You finally get into a routine, you feel good, you’re consistent… and then life happens. You miss a few sessions. Then a week. Then suddenly it feels like you’re back at square one.

If you’ve ever taken a Pilates class and thought, “This feels completely different,” you’re not wrong. It’s slower. More controlled. Sometimes even frustrating in the beginning. But here’s what a lot of people don’t realize… Pilates can actually make you better at everything else you do in the studio, especially strength training and kickboxing. Not just a little better. Noticeably better.

I get this question a lot. Someone walks into the studio, looks at the reformer machines, then looks at the mats on the floor and asks, “Which one should I start with?” And honestly, it is a fair question. They might look similar online, but they feel completely different once you actually try them. So instead of giving you a technical answer, let me break it down the way I usually explain it to clients.

A lot of people start their fitness journey with good intentions but no real plan. They show up, pick a few exercises they remember, maybe jump on a treadmill, try a few machines, then call it a day. The next time they come in, they do something completely different. There is nothing wrong with being active. Moving your body in any way is always a positive step. But if you have ever felt like you are putting in effort without really seeing progress, the reason might be simpler than you think. You might just be training without structure.

A lot of people start exercising with a goal that has a deadline. Maybe there is a trip coming up. Maybe there is a wedding or a big event. Sometimes it is just that moment when you look at yourself and think it is time to start taking care of your health again. So people go all in. They work out almost every day, try to change their eating habits overnight, and push themselves really hard.

Most people start a fitness routine because they feel motivated. Something sparks that decision. Maybe it is the start of a new month. Maybe your clothes feel tighter than usual. Maybe you saw someone’s transformation and thought, I want to feel like that too. In the beginning, motivation feels strong. You feel excited to work out. You plan your schedule around training. You imagine how great it will feel once you get stronger and healthier. But after a few weeks, something very normal happens. Motivation fades. Work gets busy. You feel tired. Maybe you miss a workout or two. Suddenly the excitement you felt at the beginning is not as strong anymore. And that is completely normal. The truth is, motivation was never meant to carry you forever. What actually leads to real results is something much simpler. Consistency.
