Reformer vs Mat Pilates: Which One Is Right for You?

I get this question a lot. Someone walks into the studio, looks at the reformer machines, then looks at the mats on the floor and asks, “Which one should I start with?”

And honestly, it is a fair question. They might look similar online, but they feel completely different once you actually try them.

So instead of giving you a technical answer, let me break it down the way I usually explain it to clients.

Let’s start with Mat Pilates

Mat Pilates is where everything begins. No machines, no distractions. Just you, your body, and how well you can control it.

At first, it sounds simple. You are just lying on the floor, right?

But then you try it. And suddenly you realize how hard it is to keep your core engaged, your ribs down, your spine in a good position. Small movements start to feel intense in the best way.

This is what makes Mat Pilates so valuable.

It teaches you how to actually use your body properly. Not just move it, but control it.

A lot of people don’t expect it to be challenging, but it is. And in a very honest way. You cannot rely on anything else. It is all you.

Now let’s talk about Reformer Pilates

The reformer is usually what catches people’s attention first. It looks fancy, maybe a bit intimidating. But once you try it, it actually feels very supportive.

The machine moves with you. The springs can either challenge you or help you, depending on the exercise.

This is why a lot of people enjoy it right away. You can feel where the movement is supposed to come from. It guides you a bit more.

If you have ever struggled to feel your core working, the reformer can help you connect to it better.

It is also great if your body feels tight, or if you are coming back from a break. It allows you to move without putting too much stress on your joints.

So what is the real difference?

The easiest way to think about it is this.

Mat Pilates makes you work for control.
Reformer Pilates helps you understand that control.

One is not better than the other. They just give you different experiences.

Mat can feel tougher because there is no assistance.
Reformer can feel smoother because the machine supports your movement.

But both are working toward the same goal. Helping you move better, get stronger, and feel more in control of your body.

If you are unsure where to start

If you are completely new, or you feel like you have lost connection with your body, Mat Pilates is a really good starting point. It builds that foundation.

If you prefer something that feels a bit more guided, or you want to ease into things, Reformer Pilates might feel more comfortable.

If you are dealing with tight hips, back discomfort, or just feel stiff overall, the reformer can help you move in a way that feels safer.

And if you can do both, that is honestly the best option. They work really well together.

Something most people do not realize

Pilates is not about doing fancy movements or trying to look a certain way.

It is about learning how to move properly.

It is about building strength that actually helps you in real life.

Standing better, moving without pain, feeling stronger in your workouts, even having more control in simple things like bending, reaching, or lifting.

That is the kind of progress that lasts.

You do not need to figure it out alone

A lot of people delay starting because they are not sure what to choose.

But you do not have to guess.

Not sure where you’re at? Let’s figure it out together.

Because that is where the real results come from.

It’s May. Not quite mid-year yet, but close enough to pause for a second and ask yourself something honest… How has your fitness actually been going so far? Back in January, most people had some kind of goal. Maybe it was to lose weight, get stronger, feel more confident, or just finally stay consistent. Now that a few months have passed, things usually look a little different than expected. And that’s okay.

There are some sessions you run… and then there are sessions you feel. Sculpt & Sip at Kismet Coffee was one of those. We partnered with Kismet in Bay Shore for something a little different. A Mat Pilates class followed by your choice of coffee or an espresso martini. Simple idea. Good people. Good energy. That was the goal. We planned to keep it small. Just 10 spots so it stayed personal. That didn’t last long. The spots filled quickly, and we ended up opening 3 more because there was no way we were leaving people out. And honestly, I’m really glad we did. The room felt full in the best way. Not crowded, just… alive. From the moment we started, the energy was there. People showed up ready, open, and fully in it. And that’s what made the night what it was.

Most people start working out because they want to lose weight. That’s usually the hook. But if you’ve ever stuck with training for more than a few weeks, you’ll notice something… the number on the scale stops being the most important thing. Not because it doesn’t matter at all, but because other things start to matter more. Things you didn’t even expect.

At first glance, Pilates doesn’t look that intense. The movements are slow. There’s no jumping around. No heavy weights. From the outside, it almost looks… easy. Until you actually try it.

For a lot of people, training starts the same way. Push harder. Do more. Don’t stop. You ignore the tightness. You push through fatigue. You treat every session like it has to be your best. And for a while, that can work. Until it doesn’t. You feel run down. Progress slows. Small aches start to show up more often. And suddenly, you’re working just as hard… but getting less back. That’s usually the point where things need to change.

You’ve been showing up. You’ve been putting in the effort. You’re doing the workouts, sweating, trying to stay consistent… But somehow, it still feels like nothing’s really changing. And that’s the part that gets frustrating. Because it’s not like you’re not trying.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re putting in the effort but not really seeing the results you want… you’re not alone. A lot of people think the answer is doing more. More workouts. More intensity. More sweat. But most of the time, it’s not about doing more. It’s about having structure. Because without it, even the hardest work can feel like you’re just spinning your wheels.

Let’s be honest. Starting over is frustrating. You finally get into a routine, you feel good, you’re consistent… and then life happens. You miss a few sessions. Then a week. Then suddenly it feels like you’re back at square one.

If you’ve ever taken a Pilates class and thought, “This feels completely different,” you’re not wrong. It’s slower. More controlled. Sometimes even frustrating in the beginning. But here’s what a lot of people don’t realize… Pilates can actually make you better at everything else you do in the studio, especially strength training and kickboxing. Not just a little better. Noticeably better.

A lot of people start their fitness journey with good intentions but no real plan. They show up, pick a few exercises they remember, maybe jump on a treadmill, try a few machines, then call it a day. The next time they come in, they do something completely different. There is nothing wrong with being active. Moving your body in any way is always a positive step. But if you have ever felt like you are putting in effort without really seeing progress, the reason might be simpler than you think. You might just be training without structure.
